The walled city of Cartagena lies in its massive fortifications and guards the secrets of its history in those walls. The walls of the fortress are an ideal spot to soak in the beautiful views of the ocean or watch the most romantic sunsets. You can observe the friendliness and easy going nature of the locals as you wander around the streets everywhere, or languish around its cafes or bars enjoying its famous coffee. Its streets and buildings reflect its glorious past with its Spanish baroque and colonial architecture. Here you will find the remains of watch towers, cannons, fortifications, bulwarks and batteries that tell of its importance in the past to the Spanish colonists.
The city was founded in 1533 by the Spanish and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984. While wondering around the streets of Cartagena you will experience an abundance of Spanish colonial buildings as well as astonishing squares and plazas enjoying the warm breeze coming from the ocean.
